In Pali (the language of the earliest Buddhist texts), Metta means loving kindness. In Metta the heart opens unconditionally, encompassing all that is, with acceptance, awareness, and good will.

In the competitive environment that we live in these days, it is all too easy to forget those less fortunate than we are. Singaporean youths have been shown to be increasingly depressed, deviant, and disconnected. When money, love and good intentions from their parents no longer suffice, it’s time to show them that there is a world out there beyond the claustrophobic four walls of their lives.

The Youth Expedition Project (YEP) is supported by the Singapore International Foundation (SIF) and the National Youth Council (NYC). It inspires young Singaporeans to be active and caring world citizens through its International Service Learning (ISL) expeditions. Through participation in community service and reflection, YEP volunteers learn personal, team and leadership skills; have a better appreciation of the overseas partner community's culture and socio-economic development issues. They also come closer to understanding the community development issues in Singapore and become more aware of their potential to make difference in society.

Project Metta is a collaborative effort between NTU Hall 14, Siglap South Youth Executive Committee, and the NUS Muslim Society. Although all three organizations may seem to have nothing in common, they have pledged their support in the hope that the sufferings of others be alleviated.

Metta is universal, finding expression in all religions and societies.
