Dear Friends,

Two young NUS social work grads have initiated a small campaign to raise awareness amongst Singaporeans and residents to voice their support for MOM's initiatives to improve the housing for Foreign workers in Singapore.

As you may have read, MOM has been doing some serious cracking down on errant employers who house their workers in conditions not worthy of human beings.  They need to know that more Singaporeans DO support the push for better standards for the people who come to build our city.  We owe them more than what many are getting.

Please take 2 minutes to watch this short video of a Chinese construction worker who 'lives' on Orchard Road.

To express your support for better housing, please visit:

Singaporeans and residents of Singapore do care.  Let us not be a silent majority but continue to love our neighbours as ourselves.

With love,
Melissa

Dear all volunteers,

SAC has again been invited to conduct NYAA Training Program for our prison friends at Kaki Bukit Centre (KBC) and Changi Women's Prison (CWP) coming 2009.

These courses have helped our prison friends to learn a wide array of adventure skills and instil the core elements like self-confidence and teamwork. Recognition and interest of our training programmes have been overwhelming from past prison trainings like KBC and CWP. Volunteers and facilitators who participated in prison trainings often gain more than what they had imparted to our prison friends.

Coming this January 2009, SAC will be repeating this NYAA program for our prison friends of KBC and CWP. We are flashing out for volunteers / facilitators to assist SAC in this interesting program and make this again a memorable and fruitful experience for our KBC and CWP friends!
NYAA at CWP
Date: 10 January 2009, Saturday (1 day event)
Time: 8 am to 6pm
Note: due to CWP security policy, we request 99.99 % female volunteers for this. Experienced female volunteers will be place on priority first.

NYAA at KBC
Dates: 1, 17, 18 January 2009 (3 days event)
Time: 8 am to 6pm (be prepared as it may stretch further)
Note: males and females may apply as volunteers. We will try to balance a mix of experienced and newbie volunteers so that the "fire will keep burning."

But please note that super priority will be given to those who can volunteer for both NYAA at CWP and KBC. This is to maintain the continuity of the programs for our prison friends.

LIMITED VACANCIES AVAILABLE ONLY!!

Interested? You need to meet the following points:
1) Attend the compulsory briefing and crash - course training before on 4 January 2009 (Sunday), 10 am to roughly 3 pm at SAC Clubhouse. Those who failed to turn up for this briefing will not be able to participate in this program. Can wait for 2010.

2) Above 21 years old.

3) Good to have basic knowledge in first aid, rope work , navigation, survival cooking or jungle survival skills. You no need to be Tarzan or surgeon, just basic entry level of skills.

4) Most importantly, an open mind and willing to share experience and views. You will be need to be very disciplined in the prison settings and accept criticisms. We are not going to a play ground.

Please indicate your interest by emailing us at adventuretraining@... by 14 December 2009 in the format below:
(a) full name (as in NRIC)
(b) NRIC/FIN no

TALKING ABOUT FOREIGN WORKERS

YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Organized by Transient Workers Count Too

Singapore today hosts close to one million migrant workers. We believe there needs to be a sustained effort made in promoting awareness and in improving welfare. Direct services can offer help in tackling problems as they arise, but many of these could be avoided through changes in policies and practices. To bring those about, awareness-raising initiatives on migrant workers need to continue. This requires on-going research that produces assessments of migrant workers' role and conditions, looks at the needs and expectations of all the parties concerned, and clarifies what the problem areas are. In addition, awareness-raising efforts such as public education, campaigns, engagement with the media and dialogues with stakeholders are encouraging changes in public attitudes, in the practices of agencies and official bodies in Singapore and in countries that send workers here, as well as in law and regulations.

Hi friends,

What's up? We have a module training coming up ...

Module Training for Integral Community Development Facilitators

On 22 November, we will be having our module training for Integral Community Development Facilitators.

Even if you have not been through the Overall Concept Module on Integral Community Development Concepts (that's Module 1), you can still be excited about how one committed person can make a difference in a low-income community.

You will learn how to translate a vision for empowering the low-income community into reality. You will better appreciate our 3 core values: culture sensitivity, grassroots identification and volunteerism. In addition, you will find out how you can effectively partner and mobilise low-income communities to carry out Integral Community Development projects that could change the low-income community's mindset and lifestyle away from poverty's vicious cycle towards sustainable future.

Date: 22 November 2008
Time: 9.00am to 5.00pm
Place: Vision Network Society Office
, 125 Bukit Merah Lane 1, #04-166 (Opp Alexandra Hospital)

Social Conversation on Venture Philanthropy

Date: 27th November 2008

Time: 9:30am – 12 noon

Venue: Conference Hall, Admin Building , Singapore Management University

( Participants interested in the Social Ventures Partners (SVP) Model are invited to attend a Venture Philanthropy Workshop conducted by Ruth Jones from 2 – 5:30 pm on the same day)

Synopsis

To better address societal challenges, leading thinkers in the business and nonprofit worlds are working together on new social models that combine charitable missions, corporate know-how and social consciousness in ways that transcend traditional business and philanthropy. One example of this new generation of hybrid organizations is Venture Philanthropy, a grant making model designed to augment traditional philanthropic practices and methods.

Venture Philanthropy takes concepts and techniques from the Venture Capital funding model and applies them to achieving philanthropic goals. It eschews once-off giving in favour of a long term relationship between a grant recipient and a funder who provides both expertise and capital. How effective is this new social model? What are its limitations? Are benefits to recipients sustainable? Ruth Jones, Executive Director of Social Venture Partners International addresses these issues and shares her experiences on how this model of Venture Philanthropy has created significant social impact.

What is Social Venture Partners?

Social Venture Partners is a network of more than 2000 individuals in 24 communities in the United States , Canada and Japan who care passionately about making the world a better place and give of their time and resources to do so. Fundamental to the SVP model is engagement , meaning that SVP partners get intimately involved in helping organisations they have chosen to invest in, in order to build up their organisational capacity. Partners also find the engagement of value to their personal development as it broadens their understanding of societal issues that their recipients seek to address.

Is there scope for a Social Venture Partner model in Singapore ?

We believe that as more people are actively involved in their local communities – giving of their time, their individual skills and expertise, and resources – the more likely we are to find solutions to some of society's local social issues. This local engagement would reinforce the virtuous cycle of smart giving with social impact.

Join us in a conversation as we explore the evolution of this new philanthropic culture, its applicability to Asia and the factors that could potentially contribute to us remaking and revolutionizing the social space in Singapore and beyond.

Why treat them like lepers?

By S. Murali

ALL RIGHT, here we go again.

Bright ideas to house foreign workers:

Put them on a floating platform, or perhaps a floating island.

Build separate roads for them. Provide them with their own shops, so that they don't have to mingle with the rest of us.

Hey, why stop there?

Why not dig underground and build them some tunnels to live in?

Better still, to save cost, just build extensions to existing MRT tunnelling.

Then we won't have to look at these workers at all, only when they come up for air and to do our dirty work.

Are you people listening to yourselves?

These are HUMAN BEINGS we are talking about.

Some of you won't even treat your precious pets this way. Is this what it means to become a 'first world' nation?

That you treat everyone else from the 'third world' like lepers?

I'm sorry, but some of the ideas that have been 'floated' on this issue make me nauseous.

Get off my sky-high horse and provide solutions, you say?

Here's a novel idea: Let them live amongst us.

Build good quality dorms in housing estates, so that they can get a good night's sleep and still be near amenities such as shops and post offices.

How would I like it if they built a dorm next to my house? Come do, I say.

There is an open field in front of my house at Block 261, Bishan Street 22, which is earmarked as a possible site to build another condominium.

Build a dorm there.

Could there be inconveniences to me and the others living there, as a result? Sure.

More people in a small area is a hassle.

But it is people that we are talking about here.

And I am okay with people.

It's bigots that I have a problem with.

This story was first published in The New Paper on Oct 24, 2008.

Hi all,
This upcoming summit co-convened by The Substation has some extraordinary speakers/thinkers and facilitators discussing 'the future as we see it'; vital information as we enter unchartered social and business territory.  I would really appreciate it if some of you could attend and also if you could let others know about it.  Beyond the obvious 'we must break even' thing (!) - there is the added dimension of venturing into some serious, expansive and timely discussions with like-minded people across many industries.

Particular highlights will be Matt Mason, author of 'The Pirate's Dilemma' - for all you marketing/future-thinking types and Marco Kusumawijaya, eco-architect and innovator the Green Maps movement for those who are also considering our planet!

I do hope to see some of you there!

Hi everyone,

Today we are seeing more volunteers venturing out of Singapore doing
various form of overseas community service project with the intention
of wanting to make a difference in another's life.

For organisations involved in International Volunteerism (IV)
projects to sustain its effort for a long haul, it depends not only
on the mere size of its volunteer pool, but also how volunteers are
developed. Different organisations have different means to develop
their volunteers based on the organisations beliefs, values and
purpose, reflecting the diverse ways they generate their activities.
As every organisation has our own strengths, there is much to learn
from one another and even more to share, as each other's efforts are
synergistically leveraged upon.

While there is no common model of volunteering that works for every
organisation, there are however common trends that various
organisations can come together to strengthen. Amongst IV
practitioners, there are huge amounts of resources, information and
experiences that are worth archiving for sharing and serving as
reference for future development.

International Volunteerism Association (IVA) targets to get all
practitioners to share these valuables resources and be the central
repository for all IV practitioners as a continual process of
knowledge management. IVA is in a process of embarking on a research
project to understand Singapore's IV sector better. This is the first
phase of our study to collate essential data for us to identify and
study useful trends. Pls click (or cut and paste):
http://www.surveygizmo.com/s/59511/iv-in-sgp

This survey is important to IVA's effort to understand the sector
better. This is crucial in building the IV's sector future. It will
only take 7 minutes of your time. We hope to receive as many
responses as possible by 31 August 2008. Pls help us to forward to as
many organisations as possible who are engaged in IV in Singapore. We
hope to cover as many organisations and as many sectors as possible,
i.e. educational institutes, faith-based organisations, non profit
organisations, for profit organisations, companies etc.

I look forward to your support to develop inspired and committed IV
practitioners with IVA.

Thank you.

Your Sincerely,

Dr Chan Yew Wing

To: mongcs@...

Dear Friends,

i know many of you are looking at the situation in Myanmar and would like to do something to help so i thought i would put together some information for you. The information here is all based on my personal opinion, experience in the aid sector and current information from friends working in NGOs so please feel free to use it as you please and note that the point of this email is not solicit funds for any organisations but to help you make a more informed choice. unfortunately the information i have on NGOs in Myanmar is limited to international NGOs as there is little or no information on national NGOs on the web. however agencies will probably be working with local partners in varying capacities.

as you all probably already know, the situation there is grim and likely get worse in the coming days due to flooding, damage to infrastructure and lack of basic goods including safe water and sanitation. It is estimated that 1 million people are affected. The immediate priority for many aid agencies is get medical attention and basic food and non-food items items to affected populations as soon as possible. many teams can only cover a small area due to flooding, lack of communications and other logistical issues. there are some emergency items that can be procured in-country but most of it will have to be flown in.

a few countries, including singapore (US$200,000 worth) have sent supplies. however, this is bi-lateral and will be up to the Government and army to distribute, so who knows where it will really end up. The Singapore Red Cross is also raising funds and will be sending in a medical assistance team. i think that they might have to work with the Myanmar Red Cross, a prospect that makes me instantly suspicious as i don't have any information on the Myanmar Red Cross and who heads that operation, it could be a government official or representative - same problem with the army or government handling the distribution.

If you are thinking of donating funds, my advice would be to give it an NGO that has established operations there already. This usually means that they have staff in country and are able to mobilise without having to wait for the government to issue visas. The other advantage to funding an operation that is in Myanmar already is that you know that they are not going to leave when the real re-construction work starts after the hype and media coverage is over.   Here are a list of international NGOs and websites who were already working in Myanmar prior to the cyclone:

1. Care International, www.careinternational.org.uk - have been working there since 1995.
2. Save the Children, www.savethechildren.org.uk - probably one of the two biggest. they have 21 international staff and 500 local staff permanently based there.
3. Merlin, www.merlin.org.uk - Small medical NGO with limited reach, i think they've been there for 5 years.
4. World Vision, www.worldvision.org - Christian faith-based NGO who has been there about 30 years and has as many staff as Save the Children
5. Actionaid, www.actionaid.org - has a small team in country and are trying to get more staff in to support.
6. Medicins San Frontieres, www.msf.org - Very strong in healthcare and emergencies, not sure how big their team is in Myanma

i hope you find this helpful, feel free to distribute this to anyone that might be interested and let me know if you need any more specific information and i'll try to find it.

Peace
Melissa

Tony Meloto (2006 Ramon Magsaysay Awardee)

Antonio "Tony" Meloto leads "Gawad Kalinga" - a growing global movement involved in building holistic and sustainable communities for a slum-free, squatter-free Philippines.  He travels the Philippines and the rest of the world spreading the blazing spirit of heroism amongst Filipinos and non-Filipinos alike.

He represents the many ordinary Filipinos living extraordinary lives in service of the poor in the Philippines.  His work now focuses on building the GK global network of partners and expanding advocacy abroad.  This creates the possibility and access to open Gawad Kalinga in other developing countries like India, Nigeria, South Africa and Nicaragua, in addition to the fast-growing GK work in Cambodia, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. In the span of 4 years since the vision of GK777 (building 700,000 houses in 7000 communities in 7 years) was launched, GK has built over 1700 communities nationwide and has helped hundreds of thousands of families.

"I am really sorry for the state of things, because of my failure to do something about it.  And many are now sorry, just like myself because of this state of degradation… But feeling sorry is not enough. Sorry does not restore beauty, sorry does not restore dignity, sorry does not restore the plan of God for man.  Sorry begins it, but sorry is not enough.

What needs to be done is to bring sorry to action, to convert regret to reform, to lift apathy to compassion and development.  We who have not done well by the talents and treasures we have been gifted with, we who have abdicated our responsibility of shepherding the poor and the young to their birthright of enjoying the treasures of a beautiful and abundant country, we who have seen the errors of our ways and are sorry --- we must now restore what we destroyed… or allowed to be destroyed."

excerpt from  Commencement Speech at Ateneo University, March 2006.

 Elisea 'Bebet' Gillera Gozun
(2007 Awardee of the UNEP Champions of the Earth)

Mrs. Elisea "Bebet" Gillera Gozun's commitment to public service and her passion for the environment has given her the energy to overcome obstacles, persuade disbelievers and shape alliances.  Her leadership in World Bank projects resulted in tangible results such as   the introduction of pollution charges for industrial effluents in the Philippines, the establishment of the ECOWATCH programme – an innovative public disclosure programme of environmental performance of priority industries – and the "Brown Fund"- the first tripartite funding source for local urban environmental initiatives, jointly managed by non-governmental organizations (NGOs), business and government.

Mrs. Gozun recognized that without the local communities, the private sector and local governments on board led by mayors, no national policy could succeed. She has pushed for the introduction of community-based waste recovery, recycling and reuse in the Philippines and has also worked for the establishment of materials recovery facilities and on upgrading the quality and capacity of landfills for the residual wastes. Her personal integrity, combined with a keen pragmatic sense for what is politically feasible to constitute a viable solution, have won her the trust of business leaders, NGOs and political decision-makers alike.  www.unep.org/champions/Winners/ winners2007/bebet.asp
