To: mir8@yahoogroups.com From: lee_suling_88@... Date: Sat, 8 Aug 2009 07:32:07 -0700 Subject: [mir8] Welcome Tea and schedule for the weeks ahead
Hey everyone,
Hope you had a good holiday/break¡coz sch is starting real soon (T-T)
Anyway, I have come up with a schedule until our hand over to the new batch, so don¡¯t disappear from MIR too soon ok! (=
Week 1:Tue¨¤Andrew to print flyers for welcome tea.(about 10-15 per faculty only) (Evan to send him soft copy of flyer). Bring to sports club to put the chop. All to collect from me by Wed, and put up by Thu.
Week 3: Mon, Wed¨¤Welcome Tea. Thu¨¤Training (5km run). Sat¨¤Training (stairs, clementi) and Technical (Basic ropes and hitches, and prusikking)
Week 4: Mon¨¤Jane¡¯s SWET talk. 2 weekdays for training (long run and intensive), days depending on majority¡¯s schedule. Sat¨¤MIR9 outing, prob hiking somewhere
Week 5: Elections (prob by voting like last year) and one meeting (depending on majority¡¯s schedule) to handover everything to the next batch. Trainings as per usual.
Ok, it seems like a lot, so lets split up the work.
Besides the flyers, I will need each of you to come for at least 1 welcome tea (I will be at all 4) to help out . I will be there for weekday trainings only, so I will need some of you to come for sat trainings/technical.
Seniors are welcome to come for Welcome teas and trainings (=
Another thing, MIR9 would make up most of the exco for next semester, but pple from the current batches who would still like to continue in the exco can choose to do so. (=
Feel free to comment/add in anything I missed out.
Thanks!
Suling
p.s. huiyun could you fwd this to seniors who may be interested to join in the welome tea/trainings? thanks!

hey,
I have 2 pairs of wool socks(i got cheap from daiso, rabbit fur,
but they work well keeping warm). I think daiso still sells them at 2
each - cheap and good! (After looking at what Hem and Sitaram wore
during the course, I think "anything goes". seriously. But nz not so
sure.)
Weidi is donating his headlamp that matt is holding on to to the
store; sadly he is not in sg, else he can lend the pair I borrowed
from him. I poor - no headlamp.
Anyone wants my army boots? :P

One more thing, If we get the posters printed by Monday, when can we distribute it earliest to the MIR8 members to go and paste it everywhere??...We must act fast...
hi all,
I know this is very late, but I just want to get the discussion
started before any ah1 kong1 starts to gong2 kor4(ok, not very
appropriate term, but I mean for wee*ahem*Any Alumni to dictate
anything ); us kia4's("children", essentially the main body) need to
start the ball rolling, but this still concerns all MIR members, both
the main body and the alumni.
I have discussed this with MIR7 before on this, regarding the
direction of MIR in the future and of course, MIR6 people would have
already been on this topic I believe. ( see the article by Lulin on
the ITE team:
http://asia.groups.yahoo.com/group/make-it-real-7/message/851).
Basically to summarise, with alpine mountaineering getting common in
Singapore, more and more groups or institution are gearing up for this
sport, how is MIR going to differentiate ourselves from others? This
is not just an issue which has no effects on the current people in the
program, in fact the main body should be affected the most in terms of
marketing and fund-raising efforts.
Lets start with the initial objectives of MIR, which is found from
where we connect with the past with, the website(btw, it is:
www.make-it-real.net; I know some dont frequent there to explore the
site extensively, Roar! :(), which says:
"
We aim to nurture young mountaineering talents and build up the base
of mountaineers in Singapore. More generally, the target outcome is to
inspire youths to live their dreams, and 'educate' youths both in and
out of the club that mountaineering and other adventure sports are
feasible and enriching in a modern lifestyle.
More importantly, MIR is designed to imbue students with the spirit of
adventure and groom them into new mountaineers, and in the process,
promote a balanced life beyond studies and work.
"
Maybe someone(alumni?) will like to confirm formally the authenticity
of this 2 paragraphs, we will make do with this for the moment. To
spell out in points, not in order of importance:
1. Build up the base of mountaineers in Singapore through nurturing
young mountaineers(NUS students basically)
2. Inspiring youths to live their dreams
3. Instill the impression in youths that adventure sports are
"feasible and enriching in modern lifestyle"(whatever that means).
4.Imbue in students with the spirit of adventure and promote a
balanced life beyond studies and work.
Now, I shall discuss this in 2 aspects, raising our profile in terms
of our theme and in terms of what we do(climbing). First, I think this
is the most obvious difference in us ( ya know, The Difference between
them N'US, yeah? ). We involve in charity work such as Touch
Community. We inspire youths to live their dreams(2). We do not only
concentrate on our own objectives, mainly to climb, but also to
contribute back to where our club stems from - the society.
In the aspect of climbing, our programme goes through formal technical
trainings by both trained alumni's and also TMC, I'm not sure whether
other groups do go through TMC or any form of formal technical
training before a true SELF-organised expedition.
Well, other/current climbing groups/one-off programme can achieve all
4 points, but probably not (2) in the aspect of OTHER youths(not club
members) unless a group starts to do so. I feel that this difference
is good enough, though our work is not extensive enough IMHO for
others to recognise this.
I have a few suggestions in view of this issue. Generally, MIR is
going in the CORRECT direction according to the above mentioned
objectives, just that the EXTENT of activities is maybe not enough to
be recognised as achieving its objectives and that the club is not
"growing". Looking at how MIR is being run, which individual batches
hold responsibility in the running of the club and maybe some
advisors?(im not too sure about this and their roles) to guide them,
but I feel that in order to have the club "growing", we should not
leave the club TOTALLY just to how the existing batches handles it,
but also PARTIALLY to a group of people(members/alumni) who are
PASSIONATE or in goodwill, have LOVE in the club, can SEE the
potential in how high the club can climb and can CONTRIBUTE in the
running the club with SERIOUS planning and lineup of activities in
order to up the profile. I promote this suggestion recognising that
the main body might be inclined towards trainings, fundraising and
marketing as this is they have their objective in mind- the cost of
TMC or the XP and being physically able to take the TMC/XP. With a
group which can focus on the growth of the club, the club can then
grow. Another suggestion is to have a set of activities fixed for a
batch to execute, for example a talk in secondary schools/JC to their
odac.
I mentioned the term "growing". For the near future, I believe it will
be to fullfil the above mentioned objectives. First, is the club
producing more and more ACTIVE mountaineers(apart from the SWET team).
I think the club is still young to say much about this point. Second,
are we active in having charity activities/talks which emphasizes
this? (Dont talk about us, we are already in the process of living our
dream.) Third, are we holding talks which inter-links mountaineering
with life issues, or as they call it, motivational talks? Fourth, we
are definitely juggling our work and studies with both our hands and
feet, but do you feel adventurous enough to crave for something which
might be out of our reach but do-able(if there is such a word. ok,
this 4th point is vague).
Alright, please feel free to comment/suggest/criticise. Fire away!! :)

Hey man i think the poster looks great. wish i could use photoshop like that man.
Just a few qns.
How much profit per pax are we making with this price of $2450 ?
What is the cost of food per pax that you have planned for? Im just thinking if we can take food out of the package, we can bring the price down, to maybe less than 2K and then the trip might appear more affordable.. Less work for you too.. Just wondering.
Great job anyways and looks like we can go ahead w/ publicity early this week.
Cheers, Ashok

Heys guys,
can let me know who's free to help out on the dates below? our recruitment this year is gooooood!
Welcome to the NUS Make-It-Real (MIR) Mountaineering Club!!:) Welcome to the family:) The MIR oldbirds are very happy to see a significant rise in intake of members this year:) Do keep your spirit flying! It takes courage to join our club, as mountaineering is a very demanding sport, both in terms of physically and financially. So, give yourself a pat on the back for taking the first step:) "Tough people deserve tough training", quoted from one of you guys yeah. Well said.
MIR is a very young club as compared to the other clubs in school. We are into our 8th batch running this year. Woohoo~ Hence there have been many changes to the programme over the years and till now, there is no exact winning formula nor any protocol to follow and we have always been trying to improve the programme:) (I will tell you more about our history when I see
you guys:P) The club depends very much on the initiative of current members to initiate projects and activities, hence events every year will be different, depending on how hardworking each batch is:)
Just a brief intro of myself, I am huiyun from the 6th batch. I will be lingering around to help out in planning and taking the advisory role. Guess its a way to give back to the club which I grew up with in university:) This year, the 7th batch and you guys will be leading the club to greater heights!! At the same time, alumni and senior members will also appear now and then to check you guys out and lend helping hands when needed:) So, enjoy your most in MIR. A) Below are the dates of our first training and meeting session for next week, pls take note: 1. Training - 2 Sept, Tuesday, 615pm SRC the sofa outside the glassdoor gym near the
swimming pool - Orientation 3km NUS Route - Gym Orientation
2. First Meeting - 3 Sept, Wednesday, 615pm SRC Meeting Room, where the recruitment talks were held - Ice-breakers and Collation of timetables - More about the club and Club programme - Training programme - Plan Fund Raisers - Roles and Duties
3. Training - 6 Sept, Saturday, 845am, venue to be confirmed - Orientation stairs training at Clementi BLK366 - Load 6kg, 6 sets of 22 storeys
B) Yahoo Group We will be setting up a Yahoo Group for your team, please look out for the email invite for the group probably over the next few days:) - Objective is to keep things going on among members, enhance communication and improve work efficiency:)
C) Attendance If you cannot make it for any of the training or meeting
this week, please do let us know by replying to this email:)
