Dear George,
I was project leader on the 1999 project. My name is Richard
Rainsford. Please also see the pages here
http://www.fPcN-global.org/tribes/asia/manik/index.php and the yahoo
group http://asia.groups.yahoo.com/group/mani-negritos/
The project came to an end, because no continued funding could
obtained and no large institution wanted to get involved or support
the project.
Now, consequently there are no free living Manik still
living in the forest. As far as we know, they have all been settled
and now work, as
Sakai (virtual slaves) in rubber tree plantations that have
destroyed their ancestral homeland, even though large parts of the
Banthat range are a wild life sanctuary.
Also for you information Hartmut Heller, died last year.
thanks
rains,
Dear Sir or Madam
On the FPCN web-site (on http://www.fpcn-global.org/tribes/asia/manik/manik-land.php#demography) I have found a "Manik Project Update" initiated by H. Heller. Unfortunately the updates stop on 28th January 1999. What has happened to the project since then?
Best wishes
G. Weber

The Forum for 'friends of
Peoples close to Nature' is a movement of groups and individuals,
concerned with the survival of Tribal peoples and their culture, in
particular hunter-gatherers. These were the first and are the last
societies on earth to have a non-exploitative relationship with the
natural word. Our task is to help them preserve their unique cultures
from enforced assimilation, alien religions, the ideologies of
'progress' and 'growth' and absorption into the global
economy.
