Nat John, Matthew,
as far as I know the Akha peoples are some half
Million individuals, in 4 different Nation states and
therefore far from being endangered. To my knowledge
they also came from somewhere else to their
territories the inhabit today.
I am concerned with theprobably most endangered
peoples on the Thai territory, the Man are the last
authochtonous peoples there, decimated from several
thousand some 150 years ago to now less than 150
people.
The belong to the extremely endangered Negrito race,
and to the also extremely endangered last
hunter-gatherer societies.
The king of Thailand is well aware of this situation,
his one daughter visited the Mani a few years ago.
Since them the situation worsened drastically for the
Mani due to continuing land-robbing, killing of
animals for hunting by goverment officials, forced
intermarriages with Thai, the desatrous involvement of
the SIL missionaries etc.
No organisation, no agency seems to respect the
traditional life of the Mani, except FPCN.
Hope you don´t forget this in your trials to help the
Akha
